A day for lovers

Valentine is a season for expression of love, as it is commonly believed. It is often celebrated with fanfare. In Nigeria for instance, Valentine day is a day of expression of love with exchange of gift items. February 14 has become an annual date of celebration of love, especially among the young ones.
Before now, there used to be mainly exchange of cards, chocolate and flowers among lovers. To majority of the lovers, it is a day of romance, and to the serious minded ones, it’s a day of engagement signifying promise of marriage at the end of the dating game. It also serves as symbolic day for some who got deflowered to their doom or to exploration.
Overtime, the concept changed as it degenerated in values, and essence. It became notorious for many nuisances among young teenagers mostly. That is a day some girls get raped either by coercion or tricked into. Valentine is also celebrated nowadays with young ones having their drinks laced with drugs like codeine, tramadol, rophifnol, among others. The essence-Love, seems lost.
However, there were many myths surrounding the yearly celebration of love. “Valentine day is for ladies from 17 up to 25 years old. Any person above the age should wait for mother’s day.”
“It’s a day for the man to prove his worth in the relationship. “
As the old adage puts it, “different strokes for different folks.” Most of the people New Telegraph spoke to see valentine as a day to hang out and have fun but others see it as a day to express love to people around them.

Back then I used to receive gifts, cards, flowers, frame and even text message but I don’t get anymore. Those who sell cards and flower don’t make money anymore because people don’t value it. One thing in life is change, valentine back then and now is incomparable because then it was celebrated with love, peace but because of the economic hardship, things begins to change. Valentine mustn’t be a day affair between a man and woman, it’s should be continuous and genuine because it’s there already. The core value of val is love.

I don’t know much about valentine because I’m in my 50s but all I know is that in the month of February, the only chant is valentine, it’s a special day for everyone. I was born in the village where these entire events aren’t important but here in the city it’s a day of joy.
Though valentine has its consequential impact on us especially the youth, even most of the youth who engage in valentine when asked about valentine don’t even know what it means, most of them think is all about going out, being on red, hanging out with boyfriend and girlfriend, visiting places. It is not only an affair between a man and a woman but also with everyone around us.
It is very rare to see people with flowers and cards, most of them prefer money, edible things like going to the eatery, drinking ice cream, to some people, it is all about hanging out and having fun for that day. Before the popularization of Valentine, we lived a normal lifestyle that was peaceful and decent but because of advent of technology and exposure to so many new things, it is now being celebrated in different ways and styles. The core value of valentine is love, sacrifice and being there always for our loved ones.

Valentine is a day of love and its between two lovers, a day to go out with our loved ones, it’s just a special day to show love. I proposed to my wife on valentine day and she accepted, so it’s a remarkable day in my life. The difference between valentine of then and now is that people don’t know what true love means. Back then, we are always on red and white, the red symbolize danger and the white means love. Presently valentine has been turned to something else especially in the midst of teens and youths, February 14 is now a day for pre-marital sex, drinking and flirting all around and after that day you see so many girls with unwanted pregnancy. Rose flower signifies true love and commitment.
As result of the economic situation in Nigeria most people don’t value gifts anymore, but rather prefer monetary assistance, sellers of flowers and cards don’t even make money anymore because majority of the people don’t go for cards or flower anymore, they are very rare. Moreover, Valentine shouldn’t be a one day affair but since it’s a day that’s remarkable we all just have to celebrate it with joy, love and happiness with the people we love. The core value of valentine is love.

There is a huge difference between valentines of now and then. Then, I would say valentine was about love, sharing genuine affection. The man in question St Valentine gave his life up for his friend who is a lady but now it has been misinterpreted by young ones doing immoralities and nonsense. They see it as a boyfriend and girl friend affairs. For them, it is not about unconditional love, agape love. It has become highly misused for crush, infatuation and all kinds of sexual immoralities.
Back then it was about exchange of gift cards, flowers but now it’s something else, people are messing up. The trending thing is rose flower and cards but now, because of jet age and civilization, people don’t value it, especially the ladies who are after money, they want something more of material beneficial that they deem tangible than roses and flowers. I also observe with a painful heart that greeting cards and flower have become scarce. Then sellers move about with cards and flowers, people buying red and white but now we just see it as nonsense, people prefer going to beach, cinemas, house mall, and clubs and so on.

Val is just a day we choose. It is all about me and you. I don’t know much about valentine but I can share my little experience to you. It’s a day with different experiences for lovers. It is just a day of love, a special day created and made for love. The core value of valentine is having fun and being happy with our loved ones. It’s just a day of expression of love that has always been with us.

Valentine is an annual festive to celebrate love, friendship, admiration. Red rose has a lot of meaning, it shows how you care about people around you, your partner, friends, and families among siblings, it shows how much you care and cherish them. Valentine is different from now because youths have taken it for something else. It has become a day to have sex, drinking and go clubbing. Unfortunately, celebration of val shouldn’t be between only a man and woman but between families and loved ones. We need to show love to people every day, it shouldn’t be only on February 14 because love conquers all. I Plan to go the cinema, shopping mall or even to the beach with my loved ones. The core value of valentine is love, and giving.

Val is a season of love, it is all about love. It’s when you show your loved ones how you truly care about them. There is a little difference between then and now. Unlike before, by this time people would have been buying clothe and all that. But now there is nothing to it even some people don’t care about Val anymore. They don’t see anything special about it. The real value of val is just to show our love ones how we truly care about them and get them some gift and just be with them. It is not all about boyfriend and girl friend. You can celebrate val with your family, your loved ones. I think it’s a day people get flowers and card but not like before anymore. Unfortunately, people don’t value it anymore. However, I am in love with my work so I will be here all through the day.
