Abia: Food items dealers chide Navy for detaining bus conveying vegetables

Dealers of perishable food items in Abia have lamented what they described as unnecessary intimidation and extortion by naval personnel stationed at Owerrinta, a boundary town between Abia and Imo States. They said that the naval personnel stationed at Owerrinta detained a bus load conveying theirvegetablestoAba over the alleged refusal of the driver to give N4,000 bribe for access into Abia State. Narrating his ordeal to our correspondent, the driver of the bus, Mr. Okezie Okeke said that the problem started when he arrived at the checkpoint where he was stopped by naval personnel, who demanded N4,000 before he would be allowed to cross the checkpoint. He told New Telegraph that he offered some amount, but the officers refused and all pleads made to the naval personnel to allow him to pass the checkpoint were rebuffed.
