The Chairman of Kirikiri Lighter Terminal/ Brawal chapter of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Comr. Goddy Sewa Soleji, has condemned incessant arbitrary charges by shipping companies operating in the country. Soleji, who spoke at the Evergreen Award for Most Outstanding Customs Broker in Lagos, said that most of the charges paid by importers and their agents were illegal.
He alleged that legal charges were also excessively hiked by shipping companies because of powerful Nigerians behind them. Soleji said, “They charge arbitrarily and excessively as if nobody can question them. They just wake up any day to increase charges without notice.”
He explained that the high cost of doing business in Nigerian ports had made some operators to move their businesses to neighbouring countries, which is responsible for low cargo throughput. The chairman noted that bad roads and traffic gridlock had diminished business activities in the area by 80 per cent.
