…NIS placed on red alert across airports
These may not be the best of times for the outgoing Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has placed him on a watchlist. This follows intelligence report that the governor may have concluded plans to flee the country, after handing over the reins of power to winner of the November 6 governorship election in the South East state, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
New Telegraph reports that the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), had the backing of Obiano. Highly-placed sources at the Commission said the development is a product of an ongoing investigation of the chief executive, bordering on alleged fraud and possible abuse of office. Priortothehighly-contentious poll, a coalition of civil society ofganisations (CSOs) had accused a South East governor of allegedly setting aside a whopping $4 million, to possibly compromise the exercise.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of the sources said: “The latest is that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,has placed the out-going governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano on a watchlist. “This is done ahead of the scheduled hand-over to the winner of the Saturday, November 6 election on March 16, 2022”. Another source, who spoke in similar vein, stated thus: “Already, the anti-graft agency has forwarded a letter dated November 15, to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), which was cited in the publication
