The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has aligned itself with the Federal Government that the security architecture of Amotekun program introduced by the South West geopolitical zone is illegal.
According to the Forum, what the constitution provided for is Community Policing and that is what the PGF is working for.
Fielding questions from journalists Friday in Abuja after its meeting on good governance by the PGF Steering Committee, the governor of Plateau State, Mr. Simon Lalong speaking on Amotekun said: “Even if they are doing that it has to be within the law. So, what is within the law as far as Governors are concerned is the issue of community policing and we all have agreed on that.”
Since the governors of the South West zone launched the security architecture, it has been an issue of controversy with Federal Government declaring it illegal.
According to the Minister for Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN the Amotekun security architecture as designed by the South West governors for the security of the zone was illegal as it was not provided for in the constitution.
The Minister had argued that what the constitution provided for was the Federal Policing and community policing for the states.
However, the governors and some others have argued that under the federal system as practiced in Nigeria the states and zones can provide security for its people.
The governor of Plateau State speaking on behalf of the PGF on security said: “On general term what we did agree after presentations from security agencies is, community policing. That one we have all agreed on so we don’t want situation where you start doing something and the federal government will say you are doing outside the law just like what they said about Amotekun. It is now that they are going to dialogue.”
