Another journalist beaten in Imo over news report

Barely three weeks after a local publisher in Imo State was beaten up by thugs loyal to a lawmaker in the State House of Assembly, another journalist, Ike Nwosu was on Tuesday beaten black and blue by thugs allegedly loyal to the lawmaker for Oguta state constituency, Hon. Frank Ugboma.
Ike Nwosu, who reports for the ‘Eastern Lead’ newspaper, was pounced on by hefty thugs and brutally battered on the express instructions of Hon. Ugboma.
The attack happened right inside the Assembly Complex in the presence of policemen whose efforts to restrain the rampaging muscle men were in vain.
A journalist, who witnessed the attack, said that Nwosu was beaten up for a story he purportedly wrote which had put Hon. Uche Ogbuagu, member representing Ikeduru and Ugboma at daggers drawn.
While Ogbuagu said he was misquoted by the report, Ugboma said Ogbuagu maligned his person by the statement credited to him in the report.
For whatever reason, Nwosu went to the Assembly complex on Tuesday and to Ugboma’s office to explain to him that the said report was not written by him, but one thing led to the other and Ugboma ordered his thugs to throw him out of the Assembly Complex, he also was alleged to have shouted at his boys who were merely dragging Nwosu out of the Assembly Complex that, “If you don’t beat him, you’ll be in trouble”. At that point, the music changed for Nwosu as blows came at him from all directions.
Ike Nwosu has since petitioned the Imo state Commissioner of Police urging him to call the lawmaker to order and restore his personal effects – mobile phone, reading glasses and cash – that were stolen from him during the attack.
