ASUU donates COVID-19 support materials to Kebbi

Members of academic staff of the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology (KSUSTA), Aliero branch, under the umbrella union, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have donated support materials to the Kebbi State Government in fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
The items, which were presented to the Kebbi State Task Force on COVID-19 at the Primary Healthcare Units in Birnin Kebbi, include four cartons of alcohol-based hand sanitisers and 150 face masks.

This was as the union also donated face masks and hand sanitisers to the university host community; the General Hospital, Aliero, and palaces of Sarkin, Sarkin Dan Warai and Sarkin Sabiyel, the monarchs in Aliero community.

While presenting the items, the university’s ASUU Chairman, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Wawata, said that the donation was the union’s response to fulfill the core mandates of the Nigerian universities, anchored on teaching, research and community service.

According to him, as the state governments and the nation at large, are looking into ways of easing the lockdown as a result of coronavirus, ASUU, however, deemed it necessary to donate the items as intervention materials to support government in its effort to curb the pandemic, since efforts to curb the spread of the virus could not be left for the government alone.
He commended the Governor Atiku Bugudu and the State Task Force on COVID-19 for the proactive measures taken so far in consulting stakeholders in the state, which has continued to yield positive results in easing the lockdown in the state.

Receiving the materials, the state Commissioner of Health and Chairman of the State Task Force on COVID-19, Ja’afar Muhammad, commended ASUU for the gesture, even as he acknowledged that the donation was timely and much needed at this time the government was considering easing the lockdown in the state.

Also, on his part, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza applauded the effort of ASUU-KSUSTA and called on other unions in the university to emulate the union’s gesture.

He said: “The Kebbi State Government had approved the sum of N429,000,000 for the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for members of academic and non-academic staff of the university for the period of 2009 to 2013. Currently, academic staff had been paid off 100 per cent of their claims. I also encourage the union to do more in other areas of community services so as to uplift the state and country at large.”

However, ASUU enjoined the people to follow strictly the various guidelines and measures put in place by the NCDC to ensure the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic in state.
