ASUU strike: NANS to block major federal roads Feb 28

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said it will block major federal roads nationwide on February 28, if the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Federal Government fail to reach a compromise and call off the ongoing strike in public universities. In a statement yesterday the National President, Asefon Sunday, said they re solved to block the roads during their congress in Sokoto State at the weekend.

 

He said: “It was resolved that we act decisively to rescue our future and the tertiaryeducationsystemwhichis ourmajorconcernfromtotal collapse.

 

“Nigerian students can’t continue to pay for the sins we never committed. As we are paying for our education, we strongly believe we deserve the best.

 

At the end of every industrial action, ASUU members are paid their salaries; likewise government officials in charge of education supervision get their pay.

 

“It’s only Nigerian students that get nothing but a waste of everything. The houserentisnon-refundable, the age count is irreversible.

 

Theextensionof stay oncampus didn’t only affect our academicjourneybutdestabilize our life plans as many miss the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilization due to age limit, many lost job opportunities arising from age factors while many became exposed to risks and crimes following the avoidable idleness mode the strike action imposed on Nigerian students. “To act against these numerous consequences of

strike  action on Nigerian students’ academic journey, I am pleased to direct the immediate commencement of planning and mass mobilizationof Nigerian students and Comradesacrossthe36states and theFCT inline with Congress’ decision.”

 

The students said they would prevent entry into the National Secretariat, Abuja supervised by their FCT officers.

 

Sunday said: “These became sacrosanct once ASUU and FG failed to reach a compromise and get our campuses reopened on or before February 28.

 

“In a clear term, February 28 is hereby declared as National Action Day  against ASUU incessant strike action tagged #EndASUUStrikePermanentlyNow.”

 

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has scheduled a meeting with ASUU today to continue discussions with a view of ending the one-month strike.

 

The meeting is at the instance of the Minister of LabourandEmployment, Dr Chris Ngige.

 

Members of the National Executive Council of ASUU, who arrived in Abuja Sunday ahead of the meeting, stated that the strike would be called off if the governmentagreestofulfilitsagreement with the union.
