ASUU threatens strike over FG’s refusal to honour agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has threatened to embark on a long strike over alleged non-implementation of agreements reached with it by the Federal Government. This is coming from both Ibadan and Yola zones of the union following a decision taken at the respective zonal meetings yesterday. Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, yesterday, leadership of the Ibadan zone of the union, led by its zonal coordinator, Professor Oyebamiji Oyegoke, called on Nigerians in all strata to intervene “at this critical moment before our members withdraw their services”.

The press interaction, which was on the sideline of celebration of the Human Rights Day on December 10, was used to press home ASUU’s demand for full implementation of the 2020 MoA agreement comprising funding for revitalisation of public universities; Payment of earned academic allowances; Withheld salaries and promotion arrears; Renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement; Inconsistencies in IPPIS Payment, and University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) are some of the contending issues. He said: “While we commend interventions of notable Nigerians in the matter, it should be stated here that it is about actions and not deliberations. “These are no new demands. Some of our members have not been paid a salary since December last year and they’re still working.”
