ATBOWATON pledges commitment to safe operations

Nigerians patronising the services of boat operators have been assured of their safety and security on Nigerian waters. This assurance was given by the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters (ATBOWATON), Mr. Lawal Saheed, while speaking on the operations of its members, saying that they are not motivated solely by profit making. According to him, his members over the years have contributed to the development of water transportation in Lagos State through its various operations, especially in taking over abandoned, and unprofitable ferry routes and discovery of new ones for the benefit of the people. Saheed revealed that through partnership with the state government that its members have invested a lot in the business. He said: “A lot of our members invested to broker new routes, and maintain access roads upland to most of the jetties at no additional cost to the government and people living by the waterside or using same to reach their homes in the hinterlands.

“Pioneers like our national president, Tarzan Balogun, invested so much in Badore, Ikorodu and even what we know as Victoria Island Waterfront and there are also many small time operators that were consistent in providing services for the people to and from the island to mainland without which nobody can readily lay claim to the development of these places. Between Ijede, Badore, Ikorodu Epe, Badagry, and Victoria Island, our members move passengers in droves, putting safety ahead of other considerations.”
