Bandits invade Kaduna community, kill 2, abduct 50

CAN calls for prayers

Bandits in the early hours of yesterday invaded a community in the suburb of Kaduna metropolis killing two persons and abducting at least 50 residents. Following this development, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State chapter, has called for prayers over the incessant attacks, killings and kidnapping across the state. This is as the Kaduna State Police Command said 28 persons were abducted and efforts are on to rescue them. The attack took place at Ungwan Gimbiya Community in the Sabo area, Chikun Local Government Area of the state. A resident of the area told newsmen that a total number of 13 houses were attacked by the bandits and that was why a large number of residents were abducted. He also said the bandits who were in their numbers were shooting sporadically and breaking into houses at will, adding that the two killed might have tried to escape from them.

The Gimbiya resident explained that the attack lasted for over two hours as heavy gunshots rent the air, even as he said some residents had to escape from their houses and run for their dear lives. He further explained that since they lived not far from Sabo none of them thought that bandits can come to the area and kidnap people, but they were surprised by the daring nature of the attack. Reacting to the fresh abduction, Kaduna State Chairman of the Chris tian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. John Joseph Hayab, said a pastor who resides in the Gimbiya community called him and narrated the incident to him in the early hours of the day. Hayab said the security situation is getting out of hand as nobody is safe irrespective of where one lives, calling on the people to be prayerful and careful in all that they do and where ever they go.

Meanwhile, the state Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige, told Saturday Telegraph that contrary to widespread reports only 28 persons were abducted. Jalige also said security operatives were already after the kidnappers with a view to rescuing those kidnapped unhurt. He said the command had visited the Gimbiya community to see the situation of things.
