Bizwoman jailed 6 years for trafficking in 2.9kg of cocaine

Justice Ayokunle Faji of a Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced a 3-year-old businesswoman, Gabriel Chidinma Juliet, to six years imprisonment for trafficking in 2.9kg of cocaine.

The judge passed the verdict after holding that the prosecution has successfully proved the charge against Juliet beyond every reasonable doubt. Prior to the businesswoman’s sentencing, her lawyer pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy, as she has vowed not to engage in anything illegal.

In his plea for leniency, the lawyer told the court that his client is a first-time offender with no previous record of conviction over  any criminal act.

In the course of the convict’s trial, NDLEA’s lawyer, Dinneys Owen Fingere, called a total of six witnesses and tendered several exhibits, among which is the convict’s confessional statement, international passport, report of forensic analysis and bulk of the seized drugs.

Juliet was arrested on November 15, 2015, with the banned drug, at the arrival Hall of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, while returning from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, through Emirates Airlines.

The charge against the convict reads: “That you Gabriel Chidinma Juliet, female, adult, on or about 15th November, 2015 during the inward clearance of Emirate Airline from Dubai at the ‘E’ Arrival Hall of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, |keja-Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court without lawful authority imported 2.9kg of cocaine, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 11(a) of the  National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004”.
