Five members of the same family escaped death by a whisker when a three-storey building under construction collapsed at Ohuru Isimiri in Obi Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State. The victims – an artisan, his wife, and three children –were trapped in the building which collapsed on Sunday night but were rescued and rushed to the hospital.
When our correspondent visited the scene, it was still raining heavily. It was, however, learnt that no life was lost as all the victims had been rescued by some good Samaritans with the assistance of policemen attached to Ohuru Isimiri Division.
Residents of the area said the victims could not go home that night after attending a graduation party due to the rain and decided to spend the night at the site with the hope of going home the next day.
A witness, Mr. Chinenye Ukaonu, said the incident occurred about 9p.m. Ukaonu also said the man who was trapped in the building with his family members was a carpenter working at the site.
He said: “I really don’t know what went wrong with the building. The construction has been on for more than six months. I actually passed through here a few minutes pass 8p.m. last night with my torch. I was surprised to hear that this ugly incident occurred around that period.
I came back here at 10p.m. when I learnt what happened. The people inside the building were some of the workers and family members. “I know the carpenter who was trapped in there, but I only learnt that his family members were also trapped there this morning.
As I learnt, they went for their graduation ceremony, but couldn’t return to their home due to the rain. So they were there until the unfortunate incident. The good thing is that no life was lost.”
