Building collapse: Ondo moves to conduct fitness, integrity tests to avoid occurrence

In a bid to prevent any incidence of building collapse in Ondo State, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has directed that fitness and integrity tests be conducted on buildings across the state. According to the Commissioner for Lands and Infrastructure in the State, Engr. Raimi Aminu, who disclosed this, said that Akeredolu stated that any building found uninhabitable, its occupants would be evacuated immediately.

This was just as the commissioner revealed that the governor has employed 35 engineers, architects, land surveyors and other professionals into the state workforce. While emphasising that the move on the integrity test by the governor became imperative amid the recent incessant building collapses recorded in some parts of the country, Aminu said the ministry in collaboration with the Physical and Urban Development ministry had been strengthened to monitor compliance of builders with approved specifications in building designs. He pointed out that one of the criteria for granting building approval was that the proposed building design must be stamped by a competent engineer, after which the ministry would check for conformity with specifications.
