Building collapses: Time to fix rot in education system – Adetona Akeem

The continuous tragedy of building collapses in Lagos State has been described by social commentator Adetona Adewale Akeem, better known as ‘Slimfit’, as wake-up call to fix the rot in the education system.

According to him, building collapses of some schools have exposed the rot in the  education system in Lagos and Nigeria at large.

He referred to the three-storey building which was being used as a school building that collapsed in 2017. Slimfit, noted that the building, as confirmed by the then Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode when he visited the scene of the tragedy, was marked for demolition as far back as 2015 for failing the building integrity test.

Speaking further, the social commentator said: “I was shocked to hear on radio that the Lagos State Ministry of Education said they are not aware of the school’s existence and that there is no record anywhere of the school paying levy or making any form of payment to the ministry. This statement calls for a whole lot of investigation and further reveals the crass ramshackle state of our educational system.”

Slimfit further noted: “I am so sure that there are several other schools of such that operate illegally without any government approval, and poor parents fall victims by sending their wards to such schools. In general, our government has a lot to do in terms of lifting the face of our education.”

While avowing that the country ought to have reached a stage where citizens should be “reaping the dividends of a functioning and visionary Government,” Slimfit  said it is now imperative that the government fix the rot in the educational system.

Said he: “The solution is quite simple: build more schools and refurbish the existing ones where some of the students receive lectures in classes with broken doors and  windows, torn roofs and sparse furniture.”

He further advocated that basic education should be made free in public schools.

“After all, all of these and many more are part of what our current leaders enjoyed in this same country back then,” Slimfit said.
