CDHR accuses security agents of extortion

A human rights group, Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ebonyi State branch, yesterday accused security agents in the state of extorting motorists, commuters or travelers and other road users and for subjecting them to untold suffering at their checkpoints. The Secretary of the committee, Jeremiah Onyibe, in a statement in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, alleged that motorists are being made to pay money by security agents at the various checkpoints mounted on highways. They force passengers, including sick patients and elderly people to trek long distances from the checkpoints to where they are permitted to board the buses and continue their journeys. He listed the checkpoints across the state where the security personnel extort motorists and subject the passengers to trek long distances to include Onuebonyi Bridge, Ezzamgbo and Ebonyi/Enugu boundary checkpoint, among others.

The statement reads in part: “With great dismay, the attention of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ebonyi State branch has been drawn to the abuse of human rights by the officers of security force, who mount different checking points on roads in Ebonyi State, especially the police at Onuebonyi Bridge, army personnel at Ezzamgbo and police at the boundary between Ebonyi and Enugu states.
