Chukwu blames NFF for Nigeria’s early AFCON exit

Former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has blamed the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation for the late appointment of technical crew over the national team before the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations, saying it cost the team further progression in Cameroon. The Nigeria national team lost out in the round of 16 despite achieving a 100 percent results in the group stage of the competition.

Speaking with our correspondent, the player popularly called Chairman said if the decision to let go of the former coach of the team, Gernot Rohr, was taken on time, the team would have done better as the interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, had little time to prepare the team for the competition. Speaking further, the former chairman of Enugu Rangers urged the team to secure qualification for the World Cup by defeating Ghana next month over two legs.

“The problem started earlier before the tournament and this was because the coach that trained them was not the coach that took them to the Nations Cup,” Chukwu said. “The new coach took over one week to the Nation’s Cup and you don’t expect them to do magic. So they went there and they did their best and their best was not good enough for us. Had it been that the coach started early enough he would have known what to do. “Let us qualify first and we can now talk about the World Cup. The coach is still using the team that played at AFCON. After that, we can now sit down to talk about the Mundial proper.”
