Court clears Justice Ajumogobia of money laundering charge

Justice Lewis Allagoa of a Federal High Court in Lagos, has cleared an embattled Federal High Court judge, Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, of money laundering charges slammed on her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This was sequel to the granting of a motion seeking to quash and dismiss the charge, filed and argued by Ajumogobia’s lawyer, Olawale Akoni (SAN).

In urging the judge to dismiss the money laundering charge, Akoni told the court that the motion was filed following an order of Justice Binta Nyako of Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, which he said had quashed all the recommendations made by the National Judicial Council (NJC) against his client. The silk told the court that Justice Nyako’s judgement was delivered on November 28, 2019, in a suit marked, FHC/ABJ/CS/638/2018, between Hon. Justice Rita Ngozi Ofili Ajumogobia and National Judicial Council (NJC), quashed NJC’s report and recommendation, while reinstating Justice Ajumogobia. Responding, EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, said the anti-graft agency had responded to the motion through a counter- affidavit deposed to by one, John Michael Idoko, attached to the Chairman’s Monitoring Unit.
