COVID-19: Euro-based Eagles may miss AFCON

Most Europebased Super Eagles players may not be available for selection for the African Cup of Nations as their clubs are pushing to have them stay back following the outbreakof the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in some parts of the continent.

Many African nations have been placed on the Red List of many top European countries including the United Kingdom where as many as eight Super Eagles players ply their trades and reports emerged that the European Club Association (ECA) have told FIFA it is deeply concerned with the well-being of players amid “worsening public health situation” following the emergence of Omicron variant of the Coronavirus in South Africa.

Embattled Super Eagles Manager Gernot Rohr was forced to work without seven of his first-team players for a trip to Cape Verde for the FIFA World Cup qualifier as the island nation was then on the UK’s Red List and the country face a worse situation if the European clubs succeed in c o n – v i n c – i n g FIFA to rant their r e – quest not to re  lease their players for the tournament.

The ECA wants to work with the world football governing body to “ensure all necessary precautions are in place to protect players and club interests” as the health situation “continues to deteriorate in an alarming manner”.
