COVID 19: Social media maniacs responsible for rejections of vaccination

Professor Ibrahim Umar of the University of Maiduguri has said that the proliferation of distorted video clips and messages on the social media have resulted in misinformation that made people not to accept the COVID – 19 vaccines. Umara, who is of the Department of Political Science and also an Islamic scholar, disclosed this while presenting a paper on “Narrative against COVID -19, Islamic perspectives, during an event held at the Malaysia Hall of the Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri on Friday.

“Everywhere in the world there are controversies surrounding COVID -19, both in developed and developing nations, this is because we are from different social and cultural settings, perspectives, ideologies and values. The issue surrounding the COVID -19 was as a result of proliferation of what I called ‘Social Media Maniacs’, where people post video clips and text messages that deliberately misled and distort the reality of a particular virus as well as the motive and intention of the vaccination process,’’ Umara said.

He further stated that: ‘‘The misperception about the vaccine has resulted in misinformation that made people not to accept the vaccines. Government at all levels, traditional and religious leaders should try to correct the misinformation by providing proper information to ensure that this misinformation is countered”. According to him, the developed world through the WHO had spent $800 billion dollars to develop the vaccines, which Nigeria and other developing nations doesn’t have the capacity to develop neither do they have the capacity to test the variant and therefore, he called on the political.
