…Says not all suicide cases Sniper-induced
Worried by the growing rate of suicides in the country, especially the Covid-19 lockdown induced suicides, a non – governmental organisation, Suicide Is No Solution (SINS), Friday lamented how more Nigerians commit suicide on daily basis.
New Telegraph learnt that it was predicted that by 2020 the rate of suicides will increase to one every 20 seconds. The World Health Organisation (WHO) had also estimates that each year approximately one million people die from suicide, which represents a global mortality rate of 16 people per 100,000 or one death every 40 seconds.
But speaking on the strategy to reduce the ugly development, the Project Lead of SINS, Mrs. Idy Toye-Arulogun, bemoaned deaths recorded in the country on daily basis from people who delebrately take their lives following life challenges.
Consequently, he said his group has begun advocacy to rescue more lives from untimely deaths, saying that everyone must rise up to the conundrum in order save lives of productive Nigerians.
The NGO, which also said that there are misconceptions on suicide resulting from poisoning, said that not all suicide cases are carried out by people ingesting Snipper.
She said it was disheartening that teenagers now take their lives while some adults also commit suicide for economic, social and psychological reasons. She added that poverty in the land is forcing people to commit suicide while a host of others who succumbed to depression lack access to proper counseling.
To change the ugly narrative of suicide rates in the country, she said that a team of mental health practitioners, religious leaders, social workers and volunteers have joined hands to support the cause in order to achieve its objective.
Toye-Arulogun also said that trust of the oraganistion’s campaign is the significant reduction in the rate of deaths by suicide in Nigeria through a strong public enlightenment and advocacy campaign that dissuades people from killing themselves.
