Emmanuel Onani, Abuja

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Thursday, said a total of 1,199 terrorist suspects, alongside their family members, surrendered to troops prosecuting the counter-insurgency operation in the North East, between October 14 and 29.

The Acting Director,Defence Media Operations (DDMO), Brig-Gen. Benard Onyeuko, who made the disclosure at the bi-weekly operational briefing in Abuja, added that at least 38 enemies of state were also killed during the period under review.

According to the DDMO, the feat was occasioned by renewed onslaught on the non-state actors by fighting forces, in collaboration with other security agencies.

Specifically, the military operations’ spokesperson explained that kinetic actions were being  undertaken in the land, maritime and air, to deny ‘adverse forces’ freedom of action across the country.

“Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have sustained the aggressive posture with zest in the North East.

“The Theatre Command conducted series of land and air operations in different locations have not only degraded the enemy’s operational capabilities of insurgents, but have contributed to more terrorists surrendering with their families.

“In the course of the operations within the period, a total of 38 terrorist elements were neutralized, including the ISWAP’s new leader, Bako,” the one-star general said.

This was as he further disclosed, that no fewer than 11 criminal elements, including terrorists, their informants, as well as and logistics suppliers, were arrested in the course of those operations.

Meanwhile, Onyeuko said troops of Operation Delta Safe have remained steadfast in the execution of land, maritime and air operations in the South-South Zone, with a view to forestalling activities of economic saboteurs and other criminal elements.
