… 4-year-old girl swept way, buildings collapse

A four-year-old girl, simply identified as Azizat, was swept away by floodwater in Orile Agege area of Lagos State in an early morning downpour which wrecked havoc in major parts of the state on Thursday.
While most roads in the state were flooded, leading to traffic gridlock in the metropolis, four buildings partially collapsed and two women were rescued including a pregnant woman who slumped but was revived immediately. Another storey building occupying several shops also caved in in Iyana Ipaja area of the state.
It was learnt that Azizat was swept away by floodwater from Fashola Street, Papa Ashafa, in Orile Agege. It was also gathered that the floodwater from Fashola Street runs through Aboru; Iyana Ipaja; Command in Lagos State; cross to Ota in Ogun State but ends up at Agbara where the canal discharges into the sea.
New Telegraph learnt that the tragic incident occurred when the house, located at 38 Fashola Street, was swamped by floodwater and in an effort to move to a higher ground with other residents, the poor girl mistakenly missed her step on a drainage that was covered with flood water and was swept away.
As at the time of filing this report, both NEMA and LASEMA had put resources together in recovery operations of the little girl but the body has not been recovered while the emergency management agencies are still struggling to collate and enumerate the level of destruction caused by the flood and others area badly affected.
The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, which also confirmed the report the story, enjoined residents to look out for the body of the four-year-old girl.
The Lagos Territorial Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, who also confirmed the incident, said that Azizat was swept away by floodwater from Fashola Street, Papa Ashafa, in Orile Agege in Lagos State.
