EAT’s ‘Retrospect’ collection at Lagos Fashion Week

Ejiro Amos Tafiri’s latest collection titled, ‘Retrospect’ was on the runway as the last design
to close the show at the 10th year anniversary of the famous Lagos Fashion Week.
In a short interview with the CEO of the fashion brand, Ejiro Amos Tafiri, the collection,
which had many fashion lovers in awe, was largely inspired by the very stylish
late First Lady, Mariam Babangida.
“We spent time thinking about our history. The Lagos Fashion week was 10 years. And we
wanted to design in line with that. So, we spent time looking at how far our designs as Ejiro
Amos Tafiri has been over the years because we were among the young designers that started
with the fashion week.
“We also look at the fashion history of Nigeria. The collection Retrospect’ was largely inspired
by the style of Mariam Babangida. She was a very stylish First Lady. She embraced every Nigerian
tribe’s style. She wore the Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba styles. She wore, George, Iro and Buba. She
wore the fashion of every ethnic group. She added her own style which is funky with her crop
tops, her skirts and her Ashoke style. She was the proper first lady.
“So, we were just reflecting on that while creating the collection. We were just reflecting on that
and trying to come up with something to look into the future with, embracing all of our culture,
our intricacies, our craftsmanship; a way of continuing with our tradition, even as we go into
our contemporary styles and contemporary lives. We should take what is ours and sell it to the
world in a way they would understand. These were all that were going on in my mind when
creating this collection. I wanted them to be 100 per cent Nigerian,” she said.
The collection featured colourful pieces made from silk, Ankara, Ashoke and many other
choice fabrics.
Ejiro also stated that she was thrilled to close the 2021 fashion week and grateful for all the
support the brand has given her since the fashion week started.
