A cleric and social critic in Amasiri community, Afikpo North Local Government Area of the Ebonyi State, Pastor Oko Chukwu Obeni, Sunday narrated how he was tortured to near death by leaders of his community identified as Essa, Eto and Isioru.
This is even as the community justified its action against him.
Obeni was said to have made some posts on his face book handle against some leaders of the community which the leaders consider as slanderous and action capable of jeopardizing the existing peace in the area.
He was tied hands behind his back, robbed with gutter dirt, doused with bad water and given 36 strokes of the cane over the offence. His elder brother had to buy off 18 strokes of the cane with N9, 500 in accordance with the tradition of the community.
The 18 strokes of the cane make it 50 strokes for anybody that goes contrary to the rules and regulations governing the community.
Obeni, who is currently hospitalized at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital(AE-FUTHA), later apologised to the community over his action.
The incident occurred last Thursday and the video of his torture went viral on the internet, eliciting an outcry.
But the community justified their action saying the victim desecrated the authority of the community by insulting the leaders through his facebook posts which they said were defaming them, creating insecurity in the community and portraying it in bad light.
Speaking to reporters Sunday in the community, Vice Chairman of the Essa ruling Council in the community, Chief Godffery Oko said: “The security outfit of this community, the Isi-oru, handled that situation. The boy was found guilty of defaming people’s character, he was publishing in the internet falsehood against individuals and also try to portray the Essa ruling council in bad light. He was not so maltreated and asked to eat feaces in the way the enemies of the community are portraying it.”
