Ebonyi crisis: Warlords arrested for abducting seven children

Police have arrested some warlords in connection with the abduction of seven children in Ebonyi State. The children were abducted in the ongoing communal war between the people of Enyigba, Abakaliki Local Government Area and neighbouring Enyibichiri, Echi-alike, Ikwo Local Government Area of the state. This came as the people of Effium and Ezza-Effium, Ohaukwu Local Govern-ment Area renewed hostilities leading to fresh killings in the area. The killings forced Governor Dave Umahi to direct the revocation of the bail granted to the stakeholders in the community. The people of Enyigba and Enybichiri have been at war with lives lost and property worth millions of naira destroyed. The crisis was, however, resolved by the state government. But the crisis resurrected with seven children, including the unweaned, abducted and have not been seen for two weeks.

They were abducted by suspected warlords despite Governor Umahi’s amnesty to them to release the children within seven days. The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Uchenna Orji, said the kingpin of the abduction, with a few of his gang members, had been apprehended and being detained by the police. The commissioner explained that the state government had dispatched operatives to go to the boundary of Cameroon where the remaining culprits were said to be hibernating. He said: “The Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Chief David Nweze Umahi, wishes to thank the good people of Izzi and Ikwo for the maturity they have exhibited over the unfortunate abduction of Enyigba children in Abakaliki Local Government Area. “Recall that the governor had given seven days ultimatum to the people of Enyibichiri to produce the culprits. This directive, coupled with the spirited efforts of the good people of Ikwo and Izzi and the committed efforts of the security agencies, has started yielding good results.”
