EkoUNIMED restates commitment to quality medical education

…as varsity names Finnih Chancellor

The authorities of the Eko University of Medicine & Health Sciences (EkoUNIMED), Ijanikin, Lagos, has named Dr. Abayomi Finnih as pioneer Chancellor of the first privately-owned specialised University of Medical and Health Sciences in the country.

Dr. Finnih, a graduate of Medical School, University of Ibadan, and a renowned Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, is a retired Medical Director in Lagos State.

The university Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, Prof. Olanipekun Kamal Alausa, while installing him during the fourth matriculation of the university, said that Dr. Finnih has the experience, skill and integrity required of a Chancellor of the reputable medical university.

Also, the Founder and Proprietor of the university, Dr. Hammed Ayodele Ibraheem, expressed confidence that Dr. Finnih, the pioneer Chancellor, who he described as an outstanding professional Gynaecologist, would bring his wealth of experience and medical expertise to bear in the development of the university.

He, however, reiterated that the establishment of the university, first and foremost, is to give back to the society what he needed to contribute, and to bridge the gap and frustration of Nigerian youths, who though qualified, could not secure admission to universities to pursue their dream for medical education because of the limited admission spaces in the system.

Thus, the Proprietor promised to construct a state-of-theart Medical Research Hospital Complex, as well as bring back home Nigerians in diaspora to join the crusades of quality medical education and medical delivery systems.

“Because of the Founder’s international connections we  will be featuring medical experts to join the project especially from the United States and some European countries in which I have several affiliations,” he said, adding that he had also carefully selected both Americans and Nigerians as members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the university.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A. B. Ejiwunmi, while advising the new intakes to take their studies seriously, said the essential point was that they are being groomed and prepared to take full advantage of coming opportunities and to succeed.

While congratulating the students, he said: “I welcome you into the universal community of students, who never stop learning. I welcome you into the global company of researchers who discover new phenomena and yet keep raising fresh questions that demand answers.

“This is the community of innovative and creative thinkers who keep challenging the status quo with demands that require thoughtful responses. This is a day to be philosophical in the hope that something of this awesome event will be permanently impressed on your mind and spirit.”

EkoUNIMED, which admitted its first set of students on December 13, 2018, and received its operating licence on April 15, 2021, and secured full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on June 2021 for all courses offered, as well as approval for first professional examination by Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) on October 20, 2021.

The university, according to the Vice-Chancellor, offered the following academic programmes in medical and health science related fields: Medicine and Surgery, Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Nursing, as approved by the relevant professional bodies.
