he establishment of Samuel Maduka University, Agu-Ekwegbe in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, an entrepreneurial university, is to boost university education delivery in the country, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has said.
The governor, while performing the ground breaking ceremony, he described the university founded by Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi, the Proprietor of Peace Mass Transit Company, as epoch making and another milestone achievement in the state’s education landscape.
Ugwuanyi, who placed high premium on education as one the cardinal policies of his administration, and an advocate public private partnership in the development of the state, expressed delight at the birth of the private university.
He, however, lauded what he described as the driving spirit of Dr. Onyishi in envisioning a university that is entrepreneurial in content, even as he congratulated him for his courage and vision in establishing the institution.
The governor reiterated the premium his administration placed on education as one of its cardinal policies, stressing: “This is why in almost five years, education has taken the second lead, only after the Works and Infrastructure Ministry in the state budget portfolio.”
Ugwuanyi added that his administration had provided conducive environment for teaching and learning in primary and secondary schools across the state, adding that “we ensured that our tertiary institutions are functional and stable.”
The governor, therefore, expressed optimism that the university when it takes off will generate employment opportunities, especially for the youth as well as provide the much-needed manpower for the industrial and technological growth of the country.
He noted: “As we are aware, one of the greatest challenges of this country is youth unemployment. An entrepreneurial university will address the issue of youth unemployment by making graduates not only to be self-employed, but also employers of labour.
“I, therefore, salute the courage and vision of this consummate entrepreneur, Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi in proposing this entrepreneurial university. This is where Nigeria should be in a technology-driven 21st Century.”
On his part, Onyishi, who provided a brief insight into his life’s journey, however, thanked God for His goodness, and applauded the governor for his support, saying the university was not conceive as another business venture, but as a social service aimed at improving the lives of the people, mould the children irrespective of creed or class.
“The vision is to have a citadel of learning in all ramifications that is founded on the best principles and run on the best ethical practices,” the founder said, adding that the institution is determined to build structures that would stand the test of time.
Onyishi expressed determination to build a world class university that the state and country will be proud of.
