Falcons pip Elephant in Abidjan

…qualify for AWCON 2022 on 3-0 aggregates
Senegal, Zambia also through

The Super Falcons of Nigeria in far away Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, defeated Baby Elephant 1-0 to secured their passage to the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 2nd to 23rd. Chiamaka Nnadozie was the hero after saving a first half penalty before Esther Okoronkwo secured the team’s passage with the only goal in the 87th minute of the game as Nigeria qualified 3-0 on aggregates.

To get to this stage, the Super Falcons had defeated Ghana 2-1 on aggregates and would be looking forward to winning their 10th AWCON title in Morocco. Meanwhile, Zambia and Senegal have reached the 2022 AWCON despite both failing to win the second leg of their respective second round play-off ties on Tuesday.

Zambia secured their qualification on away goals following a 1-1 draw against Namibia, while Senegal went through 3-2 on penalties after a 1-0 defeat in Mali. Senegal had beaten their West African rivals 1-0 in last week’s first leg, but Agueissa Diarra’s 14th-minute goal in Bamako meant the game went to spot kicks. Senegal’s women will now appear at the Nations Cup finals for the first time since 2012, and have a chance to emulate the men’s side after the Teranga Lions won their first-ever continental title earlier this month. Zambia and Senegal become the fourth and fifth sides to book their spots at the finals after hosts Morocco, Uganda and Burundi, who secured their place with a 11-1 aggregate win over Djibouti on Monday.
