The Federal Capital Territory Administration ( FCTA) has disclosed its intention to partnering with interested private investors in the development of the Maitama reservoir, to serve as both recreation and aquaculture centre.
This disclosure was made by the Secretary, FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Stanley Nzekwe, when he distributed fisheries input to fish farmers in Bwari Area Council of FCT. Nzekwe said that development of the aquaculture centre in the territory became necessary, following a growing demand of fish and fisheries products by the residents of the nation’s capital.
He also disclosed that it was a deliberate policy of the administration to develop all sectors of the economy, including fishing and make fish abundant that led to the secretariat investing up to the N10 million to the fisheries input which it has decided to give out to farmers at subsidized prices.
He said:”In a bid to in-crease fish production in FCT, my secretariat seeks to collaborate with any interested investors in the development of the Maitama reservoir as a recreation and aquaculture centre”.
“Our policy is therefore designed to increase fish catch and fish production which will ultimately lead to poverty alleviation, increase in revenue base of the secretariat, improvement of the income and standard of living of the FCT Fisher folks and encouragement of the subsidiary fisheries industries in the territory”,he noted.
