FG, Lagos urged to check activities under power lines

The federal and Lagos State Government should try and come together to fight the menace of trading in unauthorised areas such as power lines, transformers among others, the Head of Quality, Health, Safety and Enforcement (QHSE), Ikeja Electric, Engineer Jamiu Badmos, has said.

He said the fight against illegal activities taking place under the power lines and other critical installations points would be more effective when both the Federal and State government are involved in it.

In a release signed and made available to New Telegraph, he advised against erecting structures under the power lines or trading near areas designated for installation of electrical objects, stressing that those who operate in those areas may get elotrocuted unknowingly.

He said that proximity to power installations such as transformers, power lines and other critical areas contravened extant laws, urging people in those locations to vacate the areas, in order to safeguard their lives and properties.

Citing laws that are prohibiting people from carrying out activities under or near power installations, Badmos said that Section 3.1 of the Nigerian Electricity Supply and Installation Standards (NESIS) is explicit on that. NESIS regulation, Badmos said, stipulated a mandatory distance of 5.5 meters, 1.5 meters and a setback of 25 meters from 33/10 KV and 132 KV lines respectively.

“People need not erect structures or carrying out trading activities in areas, which are prone to dangers. They should leave those places, if they are already transacting businesses there.

The directive is necessary, because people are found of perpetrating such acts with impunity, irrespective of the dangers associated with such violations,” he said.
