GIZ trains corps members on fashion skills

No fewer than 49 corps members serving in Ogun State have benefitted from the training on make-up and head gear tying organised by GIZ, the German National Agency for International Cooperation. Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Abeokuta, a GIZ official, Suebat Gbadamosi, said that the six-day training was organised through the Skills Development for Youth Employment (SKYE) platform of the agency. According to Gbadamosi, SKYE promotes Needs-Based Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and youth employment in Nigeria.

“SKYE aims at improving the prospects of gainful employment for Nigerian youths between the ages of 15 and 35 in selected sectors of the economy, including construction, agriculture and fashion,” he said. In his remarks, Special Assistant to the Governor on Job Creation and Youth Employment, Mr Abiola Odetola, commended GIZ for the training. Odetola noted that there were limited opportunities for youth development in the state when the Dapo Abiodun-led administration came to power in 2019. “When this present administration came on board in 2019, the unemployment rate was high and the youth complained of neglect from previous administrations.

“Governor Abiodun created an office for job creation and youth development and we immediately created a job portal where thousands of unemployed youths in the state were registering. “We then began to match their skills and link them up with relevant institutions. “We did not stop at that, as we have continued to partner various institutions, which had continued to provide training in vocational education to make them self- independent,” he said.

Odetola explained that the situation had since changed through collaborations between the state government and its various partners, which had liberated and provided financial independence to young people through skill acquisition programmes. He advised the beneficiaries not to stop at just acquiring the skills, but to ensure that they created wealth with them. One of the beneficiaries, Miss Kemi Olapelumi, commended the organisers of the training, which she described as “impactful.” Olapelumi said that she had always had passion for fashion designing, promising that she would build on the skill she had acquired. She said that she would start practising the vocation from her neighbourhood with some of her friends. NAN reports that starterkits were presented to the beneficiaries to aid the immediate practice of the skills they had acquired.
