Govs: 27 states domesticate VAPP Act

State governors said some milestones have been achieved towards curbing genderbased violence in the country with 27 out of the 36 states and Abuja domesticating the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act. Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), an umbrella body of the Nigerian governors, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, in a communiqué at the end of the 31st teleconferencing meeting, said as at June last year, only 14 states had domesticated the Act. Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) had, on June 10 this year, commemorated the first anniversary of the declaration of a state of emergency against gender- based violence. NGWF had declared the emergency last year following high rate of violence against women, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 lockdown. Fayemi, who briefed his colleagues, noted that the remaining nine states that are yet to pass the Act have reached advanced stages towards domesticating the law. He urged the governors to continue to treat sexual and gender-based violence as a priority.
