Gunmen kill blind man, 43 others, abduct 60 in Niger

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists reportedly killed a blind man and 43 other persons as they launched attacks on Shiroro and Munya local government areas of Niger State at the  weekend.

In Galadinma Kolgo, Erena, Chukuba and Allawa communities Shiroro LGA, the hoodlums reportedly killed 27 people, mostly women and children, abductingthreemen, 28 women and children. Niger has seen a sharp rise in killings and mass abductions.

 

New Telegraph learnt that inoneof theattacksintheearly hours of Saturday in Munya LGA, motorbike-riding gunmenshotdead 17peopleincluding a blind man. They also reportedly abducted women and children in Guni, Zagzaga and Dazza communitieswheretheyburnt homes and farms.

 

In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Monday, the President, Lakpma Youth Association, Jibril Allawa, said the gunmen after abducting three men and 25 women in Gyramiya community demanded N60 million as ransom for their release.

 

Allawa said: “Already most of the affected communities in thetwolocalgovernmentareas are now ghost towns as the villagers have taken refuge at the internally displaced persons camps at Central Primary School, Gwada.”

 

Also, Co-Convener, ConcernedShiroroYouths, AbubakarSani Kokki, saidtheterroriststormedthecommunitiesin a motorcycle convoy, with each carrying two or three people.

 

Kokki said: “The villagers can no longer harvest their farm produces because the gunmen have warned them to stay away from their farms  Government has failed in its responsibility of protecting lifeandproperty. Wearecalling on the relevant security agencies to protect the people from further attacks.”

 

However, the Police Public Relations Officer DSP Wasiu Abiodun had yet to comment on the incidents as of the time of filing this report. In an event organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Monday said they were working towards checking the security issues in the state.
