Herdsmen invade Suswam, Jev’s villages with cattle

…destroy cassava farms, stored yam seedlings

 

The fierce attacks on peasant farmers in Benue State by armed Fulani herdsmen is yet to be over as they have again migrated into the villages of Senators Gabriel Suswam and Emmanuel Yisa Orker Jev, causing massive destruction to cassava farms and yam seedlings stored for cultivation.

 

The Senators who currently represent Benue North East and West respectively on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Senate, hail from Logo and Buruku Local Government Areas of the state. A community leader in Logo Local Government Area, Chief Joseph Anawa who confirmed the invasion of the local government to New Telegraph said some areas taken over by the herders include: Tse-Ikyegh, Tombo, Yonov, Turan and Nenzev council wards and parts of neighbouring Buruku and Guma local government areas

where large farm crops were destroyed by cows. According to Anawa, scores of people including women and children have deserted their homes to take refuge in areas deemed to be safe.

Chief Anawa said, “On February 20, 2022 at about 8:00pm, herdsmen arrived Tse Ikyegh in Yonov council ward Logo LGA with over one thousand cows and settled beside Logo stream.

 

“They migrated from Tombo council ward in Logo and proceeded straight to Yonov community in the interior part of Ugondo geopolitical axis after causing a lot of destruction to cassava farms and seed yams in Tombo and Turan council wards. “They were so hostile and did not want anybody to come close to them.

 

The locals on sighting the arrival of cows started packing out of their villages for the fear of the unknown. “Unless and until these notorious and blood thirsty herdsmen are flushed out there will be no peace in Yonov and Nenzev council wards in Ugondo community as well as the neighboring communities in Buruku and Guma LGAs.”

He disclosed that the herders after crossing River Benue, settled at Tse Azaye, Tse Agah Tse Getim and Tse Iosun all in Tombo council ward. He said they later pushed forward through Akwana in the neighbouring Wukari LGA of Taraba State and then surged through Kurungu village also Tombo council ward and proceeded straight to Tse June in Turan council ward. “Fromthere, theywentthrough Tse Ikpam, and then Gbagir and Ukusa villages in Turan council ward. There they went straight to Tse Ikyegh in Yonov council ward in Logo LGA.

 

Now they are in Tse Ikyegh, Tse Agasar (Yonov council ward) and Tse Gabo in Nenzev council ward all in Logo LGA.” Chief Anawa, a former media aide to ex-governor Suswam disclosed that when the kindred head of Mbaifu, Zaki Gbamga Nengem visited their settlement area to know their mission in his community, “theytoldhimclearly that they came to settle their and any attempt to evict them either by the host community or government agencies will invoke their anger and they will be left with no option than result to physical and open confrontation.”
