Igbo women, Northern group disagree over Kanu’s release

The Chairperson of the women’s wing of Ohanaeze Igbo Women Worldwide, Chief Mrs Calista Nkiru Adimachukwu, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to facilitate the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention to enable the Nigerian nation to forge ahead, especially the South East.

She made this known in a press release made available to newsmen in Nnewi, Anambra State.

She said: “I urge the president to immediately facilitate the implementation of the report of the 2014 National Confab for an equitable union government that would ensure that the human and material strength of each region in Nigeria are utilized equally and effectively for the development of Nigeria.”

The implementation of that National Confab she said will address the agitations of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho. She described Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as simply fighting against the injustice being practiced by the current administration against the South Eastern part of the country, where the Igbos are not considered for key positions and appointments where the federal character is applicable.

“Ohanaeze Igbo Women believe that no president of Southern extraction would try and humiliate the north and the north would keep quiet or praise that president. Let us be sincere with ourselves and acknowledge the federal character in the Nigerian constitution which gave room for a balanced appointment

We call on the president to use his remaining two years in power to make amends and reverse some of the appointments he made in the past and accommodate the south East through the federal character principle in the constitution. If we are to move forward as a united country, every section of the country must be accommodated.”

She stressed that divide and rule is a senseless policy that has caused more harm than good in Nigeria as the country has learned its lessons from the pre and post civil war era in Nigeria.

Continuing, she said that the clamour for separation by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho is just a lesson for all Nigerians to think and reflect about our possible future if our problems as a nation are not addressed urgently by President Buhari.

“The President is supposed to be the President of all Nigeria and not a president of Northern Nigeria. The president must make amends in time as well as find ways to manage the diversity of Nigeria for the betterment of all Nigerians.

“If the president is a student of history, he would have learnt some lessons from the history of the Nigerian civil war which he was part and parcel of. Just like Sir Winston Churchill once said that; ‘Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.’

“Igbo Women worldwide are once again calling on Mr. President to please release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and also facilitate the release of Sunday Igboho for peace to return to this country.

This will without doubt bring back breeze of fresh air and peace in the already hostile Southern part of the country,” she concluded.
