A group, Concerned Imo Citizens Forum (CICF), has called on the Supreme Court to use the opportunity of the review process of the Imo governorship election to redeem itself and save the country from further embarrassment. Speaking at a press conference in Owerri, the group led by Mr. Kingsley Onwubiko (Convener) and Emeka Nwokeke (Co-convener), urged the Supreme Court to rise up to the occasion and salvage the integrity of the judiciary and legal practice.
The statement read in part: “Democracy and the Judiciary in Nigeria must not be sacrificed on the altar of personal ambitions of some politicians that have very poor history of good character and conduct.
“The relevant authorities should do the needful and ensure that democracy in Nigeria does not get truncated. The reputation, trust and confidence that our citizens had placed on the judiciary must not be allowed to wane or die.
“Look around; within Nigeria and across the world, Nigeria has been ridiculed enough and we must all rise up and save this country from sliding deeper down the slope of impunity.” On the judgment by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on January 14, on the 2019 Imo State governorship appeal between Emeka Ihedioha and Senator Hope Uzodimma, the forum said, having thoroughly studied the judgment and underscored the positions of INEC, the tribunal, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
“That it concluded that based on observed copious errors of calculation which the apex court inexplicably ignored and went on to declare Senator Uzodimma winner of the election, “we join the rest of the concerned world to condemn in its entirety, the highly questionable judgment by the Supreme Court.”
