Insecurity made 2021 challenging, says IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Usman Baba, Monday, has said the security challenges across the nation, made the outgoing year a challenging one for the force.

The police chief made the disclosure at the end-of-the-year meeting with senior police officers from the rank of Commissioners, in Abuja

Baba said: “These challenges centred largely on the potent threat posed to internal security by the activities of bandits, secessionist elements, kidnapping syndicates, and other highly organised criminals.

“The challenges were compounded by the #EndSARS violence of the preceding year, which weakened the morale and operational base of the Force, following the massive destruction of police operational assets, and unfortunate deaths and injuries to police officers that attended the violent protests.”

He, nonetheless, applauded officers and men for their dedication to duty, in the face of the challenges occasioned by perceived inadequate funding, as well as noticeable manpower deficit.

This was as he noted that during the year, the hierarchy of the lead agency in internal security, worked closely with the Police Trust Fund (PTF) and Ministry of Police Affairs, in a bid to acquire a new fleet of purpose-built operational assets, which he said would soon be distributed to the police commands across the country.
