The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised the Federal Government to adopt a stick and carrot approach in handling the agitations of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
The party at the round off of its campaign in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, called on the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to dialogue with the group and the release of its leader Nnamdi Kanu.
PDP noted in a statement on Thursday by the Secretary of Publicity Committee for Anambra election Ken Okolugbo, that former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua “used the stick and carrot approach to stem the issue of militancy in the South-South. This brought the present peace experienced in that region and greatly increased our revenue as a country.
“Releasing Nnamdi Kanu and engaging IPOB in immediate dialogue will help to stem the tide of the present state of Insecurity In the entire South East.
“The APC government will rather continue to leave us in this terrible state of insecurity all over the country. We are fast turning into Afghanistan as rightly described by Governor (Ifeanyi) Okowa and Governor (Samuel) Ortom.”
The party also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to go beyond the peace accord signed by the governorship candidates on Thursday by ensuring that no incident forms is used for accreditation of voters.
It welcomed the planned use of Bimodal system of accreditation, adding: “If the Card Reader fails to recognise your thumb print then the facial features will also come into play. This was used in Isoko South by election to the Delta State House of Assembly and we saw how successful it turned out to be.
“We are set to win this election and we urge Ndi-Anambra to come out to vote for PDP, a vote for our party is a signal to what will be happening in Ekiti, Osun and eventually in 2023 to free us of the rudderless government of APC that has left us in this complete state of insecurity presently threatening the elections in the south East.”
PDP stated that the opponents were intimidated by the overwhelming support of the people to its governorship candidate Valentine Ozigbo, and attributed it to the propaganda that it induced the crowed that witnessed its campaign at Alex Ekwueme Square on November 2.
