Kunle Olayeni, Abeokuta
Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, was literally shut down on Tuesday as three-time governorship candidate, Prince Gboyega Isiaka, formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Isiaka, who was the governorship candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2019 elections, was received into the APC by Governor Dapo Abiodun, the party’s National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and the state APC Caretaker Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi.
Prominent politicians in the ADC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who were joined by hundreds of their followers from the 20 local government areas of the state, also declared for the APC at a carnival-like event held at Ake, Abeokuta.
A former deputy governor, Alhaja Salmot Badru, former members of the House of Representatives, Dave Salako and Onadeko Onamusi; former state PDP Chairman, Elder Joju Fadairo, former Board of Trustees (BoT) member of PDP, Chief (Mrs) Iyabo Apampa, former state PDP Secretary, Chief Pegba Otemolu, former Deputy Speaker, Edwards Ayo-Odugbesan, and Olootu Dipo Sofowora, were among the defectors.
Oshiomhole, who was represented by the APC South West Zonal Secretary, Hon. Ayo Afolabi, said the defection of Isiaka and other political bigwigs was significant as it marked the journey of the state to a one-party state.
The National Chairman lauded the governor for pursuing inclusive governance and assured that the interests of the new members would be well accommodated in the party.
