ISWAP kills 5, injures 16 as President Buhari visits Maiduguri

Five persons were killed while 16 others were reportedly injured as members of the Boko Haram fighters and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) launched rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) in Maiduguri metropolis, a few minutes before the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari who was on one-day working visit to Borno State. The President commissioned Aircraft Hanger and Muhammad Indimi Centre for Distance Learning constructed by a businessman, Alhaji Muhammad Indimi, at the Maiduguri International Airport and University of Maiduguri respectively; and first-ever flyover bridge and Alhaji Tijjani Bolori Memorial Day Secondary School constructed by the government of Zulum.

In his his speech at the University of Maiduguri, President Buhari assured of his determination to deal with the enemies of this country as, according to him, his administration has ordered for military hardwares, such as armoured vehicles, helicopters and aircraft to address the security challenges.

He said the security situation in Nigeria is better than the way he meet it in 2015, stressing that the people of the North East are in better position to confirm it. New Telegraph learnt that four persons were confirmed killed in the Ngomari Ayaafe area, some metres to the Air Force Base and Maiduguri International Airport, where the President landed. An eye witness Sufia Buba, who spoke to newsmen in an interview, said the incident occurred about 10:50 am, at least, 30 minutes before the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari. Buba said: “We lost four persons here, as you could see the part of the explosion on the building. We lost two persons instantly and two others as a result of the explosion. It is a sad moment for us, we are grieved and it is our prayers that Allah will accept their souls.

“Aside from the victims, at least, ten persons also sustained various degrees of injuries. We are confident that President Muhammadu Buhari would know that these persons are still much around, and he should remember that we voted him into power to end this insurgency. But we are not satisfied with his performance. How can we continue like this, when lives of human has been reduced to that of chicken? It is worrisome!” Another witness told our correspondent that he saw the bodies of two children, several other injured people being taken to hospital as a result of the rocket-propelled grenades, which landed in the Bulumkutu general area. New Telegraph gathered that attacks occurred in three different locations, including Gomari, Ayafe near the Air Force Base, Ajilari Cross, and Bulunkutu.
