ITTF World Championship: Quadri, Abiodun win, as Omotayo, Edem suffer defeat

It was mixed feelings for Nigeria table tennis stars participating in the ongoing ITTT World championship in Houston, Texas in the early hours of Wednesday. The quartet of Aruna Quadri, Bode Abiodun, Olajide Omotayo and Edem Offiong were representing the country in the championship and all of them were in action against their respective opponents. Germany-based Quadri recorded an emphatic 4-0 win over his Belarusian opponent Aleksandr Khanin, the breakdown of theresultshowhisdominance with 12-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5. Abiodun continued the Nigeria prowess with another win against India’s Amalial (4-3) 11- 6, 11-5, 11-5, 8-11, 12-10, 9-8, 6-11. Brazil’s Gustavo Tsuboi halted Nigeria dominance by beating Omotayo Olajide 4-0 (12-10, 12-10, 11-8, 11-6). Women’s single Doo Hooi Keem proved too much for Edem Offiong as she defeated her 4-0 (11-3, 11-5, 11-2, 11-4). Meanwhile, Nigeria bounced back strongly in the mixed doubles as the duo of Abiodun and Edem gifted Nigeria victory over Gonzalez and his pair 3-2 (11-9, 1-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-4).
