JUST IN: Renowned scholar, theatre director, Bayo Oduneye, dies at 87

Renowned theatre scholar, arts administrator, and Artistic Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Professor Bayo Oduneye, is dead. He was 87 years old.

Popularly called ‘Uncle B’, Prof. Oduneye, who is one of Nigeria’s most respected theatre directors and stage managers, and has trained a whole generation of theatre artistes in the country, passed on in the early hours of Monday.

The National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), in a statement signed by its President, Israel Eboh fta, stated that the theatre icon’s death is a great loss.

“With heavy heart, we announce the transition of our elderstatesman, Distinguished Fellow of the Association, erudite theatre scholar and teacher, mentor, astute arts administrator and director par excellence, Prof. Bayo Oduneye fta, who answered the call to glory in the early hours of today.

“Our condolences go to the Oduneye family, the theatre community and the entire Nigerian creative family.
“May the soul of our dear Uncle B continue to be a blessing,” the satement reads.

The late Prof. Oduneye was a lecturer on Directing and Stage Management at the University of Ibadan for more than four decades. He served as the Artistic Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria  (1991 – 2000).
