Kanu, Igboho: Nobody has approached FG for political solution –Malami

More than six weeks after the South East Caucus of the National Assembly promised to seek a political solution to the case of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has said that no group has approached the government over the issue.

Speaking on Arise News television interview yesterday, Malami said the Federal Government has not ruled out a political solution of issues concerning Kanu and detained Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Igboho. He said: “But, then, there has to be an approach for the government to consider.

So, I cannot be preemptive in telling you clearly and out-rightly that reconciliation is, perhaps, being considered without an approach being made. “If an approach is being made; if at all any is being made, then we will look into it for the purpose of looking at it with the authenticity of it, the good faith associated with it and, perhaps, bring about the considerable factors relating to the negotiations or otherwise. “So, it is not a conclusion that one cannot outrightly make without juxtaposing associated facts relating to the reconciliation. You cannot operate a reconciliatory approach in the blues. It is never onesided. There has to be an approach and then a counter consideration.

“So, no approach in that respect is on the table for consideration yet. When, perhaps, a kind of request is made, we will consider.” Malami reinstated government’s determination to unmask those supporting terrorism and secessionist movements in the country.

His words: “The government has been unmasking because, as you rightly know first, Igboho is charged; Kanu is charged over and above that investigations with regard to funders and financers of terrorism in Nigeria are ongoing. “So, at the appropriate time which is, indeed, when the investigations are concluded and these parties are being presented to the court, they will certainly be known.

“But then, Nigerians are entitled periodically to be informed as to what we are doing. Generally speaking as far as the security situation is concerned, as far as governance is concerned and the administration, you cannot rule out all possibilities.

“But crime is a crime; when there is criminal undertone associated with certain conduct you cannot take away the right of the government to take steps with particular regard of ensuring that the people that are in one way or the other operating in breach are brought to book.” When reminded that repentant Boko Haram members are being pardoned by the Federal Government, Malami defended the position of the government, saying that the previous government offered Amnesty to Niger Delta militants. He said everybody that commits a crime will face the law. “Apparently, there has been a programme of amnesty before now. So, it is not about Boko Haram or, perhaps, the Niger Delta militants, generally speaking, that was why I’m telling you that no possibility is ruled out.”
