President of the Nigeria BasketBall Federation, Musa Kida, has called for a special concession for sports in the country.
Kida told our correspondent that nobody would wait for Nigeria at major competitions whether there was funds or not to participate at such events.
“It is true that sport is very special in the sense that it has some form of timing but it isn’t flexible most of the time,” he said.
“So clearly a world tournament is not going be postponed just waiting for Nigeria. African organisers will not postpone a competition simply because Nigeria is not ready to participate. So, I do understand the inflexibility that exist most of the time when it comes to international and continental tournament.
“Having said that, I believe sports should have a very special place in the hearts of the National Assembly and the executive.
“I also know that the same argument can be made for many of the sectors that also feel that they should be priority in terms of allocation and how funds should be released.
“My take on this is we need to be able to have a way, a system that will allow us participate even if the budget are not appropriated yet.
“There should be some form of concession that will allow us prepare and participate in international competitions even while waiting for the passage of the budget.”
The Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, recently wrote to the National Assembly to help appropriate funds for some competitions, including the Basketball World Cup next year.
