A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) based in Ilorin, Kwara State and Founder of Yusuf Olaolu Ali Foundation, Mallam Yusuf Ali (SAN) has called on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to assist brilliant, but indigent students to achieve their academic goals in life.
Ali, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) made the appeal during the formal presentation of scholarships, under the auspices of his pet Foundation to beneficiaries selected across Oyo, Osun and Kwara States.
No fewer than five beneficiaries were selected from each state under the scheme, which is being managed by a Board of Trustees comprising Ali (founder), Yisa Kobebije Oke Abdulkareem, Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, Aliu Alabi Badmus and Nimah Ibilola Ali.
The legal luminary explained that the choice of the three states was based on the fact that Kwara has been his base, while his parents live in Oyo State, and Osun his home state.
The criteria for selecting the beneficiaries, according to him, include that they must be indigenes of the selected states; must be undergraduate in a Nigerian university; must be in 200-Level and that the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) must not be below 3.6 points on a scale of 5.0 or 4.5 on a scale of 7.0”
However, he explained that any recipient that is expelled or suspended for misconduct would automatically forfeit the scholarship.
The legal icon noted that the main objectives of the scheme are to promote education and reduce poverty in the land, even as the scheme seeks to promote the idea that poverty should not be allowed to prevent talented and brilliant children in our communities from actualizing their full potential.
“At the same time, having the opportunity of good education will help to significantly diminish personal and communal poverty,” Ali said.
