Mbazulike Amechi: Why I led Igbo leaders to Buhari

…seeks South East gov’s support to end insecurity

Former Minister of Aviation in the First Republic, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, yesterday revealed why he led some Igbo leaders to visit President Muhammadu Buhari some days ago. Amechi, 92, who spoke to journalists in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, where he went to brief Governor Dave Umahi on the efforts of the Igbo leaders to bring lasting peace in the South East following violent agitations by separatist groups, expressed dismay over the killings in the zone.

The nationalist said Buhari was happy to receive the Igbo leaders and that the leaders had frank, sincere and useful deliberations targeted at finding peace and true reconciliation in the zone and expressed the hope that there would be positive results from the visit to the President.

He lamented the new spate of violence in the region in which policemen and civilians were killed and appealed to the perpetrators to lay down their arms, respect his age and let him help to make peace before returning to his maker. “A few days ago, I led a small delegation of selected Igbo leaders to see the President of Nigeria on the growing tempo of violence in Nigeria, especially in the south east.

The President was happy to receive our delegation and our discussion was frank, sincere, and all targeted at finding peace and true reconciliation. We are expecting positive results. “I have come to Ebonyi State to brief the governor, who is the Chairman of the South East Governors, and seek their support in our efforts to find peace.”
