Mikel terminates contract with Al-Kuwait, close source reveals

Former Super Eagles skipper, John Mikel Obi’s contract was not terminated by Al-Kuwait as is being widely reported, but he was rather the one that terminated his contract with the Kuwait-based outfit, owing to several reasons, a close source to the player has revealed exclusively to AOIFootball.com.

The source said that Mikel would have loved to set the record straight, but was not fully disposed to giving further details because of the legal implications.

The source said further that the mercurial midfielder was already working on the next phase of his football career and would be back on the pitch soon.

“First, I want to say that Mikel was professional all through his stay at Al-Kuwait,” the source ssid. “He contributed his quota to the club while there. But I want to state categorically that his contract was not terminated by them as is being reported.

“Though he can’t really say much right now or go into details because of legal implications, I want to assure his fans that all is well and he’s happy to be back with his family after several months.

“Mikel is a winner and always gives his best where ever he finds himself. I can assure you right now he’s already working on getting back on the pitch and looks forward to the next phase of his career,” the source revealed.

The 34-year-old Chelsea Icon joined the club last July on a free contract after opting to extend his stay with Championship side Stoke City and was immediately named captain of the club with his arrival also helping the club to secure the services of former Monaco striker Dieumeric Mbokani.

Having helped the club reach the finals of the Kuwait Cup and as well as the semi-finals of the Asian Cup before they were knocked out, Mikel was preparing for the start of the new season when the news broke out about his contract termination with the club due to mutual consent.
