Mob lynches father of three mistaken for robber

…victim’s family cries for justice

An angry mob has beaten a 45-year-old carpenter, Mr. Olufalayi Obadare, to death at the Olujoda area of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
A witness said the father of three was killed about 5p.m., on Wednesday when some youths, who mistook him for a robber, descended on Obadare for roaming the streets in a suspicious manner.
The victim, who was living with his family on llawe Road, Ado-Ekiti, was allegedly clubbed and attacked with other deadly weapons. As a result of the beating, Obadare slipped into coma before he finally gave up the ghost.
Investigation showed that the Olujoda area has been under consistent attacks by robbers in recent times, which prompted the youth to descend on the victim.
Obadare’s wife, Yemi, said her husband told her of a contract he just secured at Olujoda area.
She said it was wrong for the youth to have mistaken the victim for a robber without cogent reasons.
The widow bemoaned the harrowing death of her husband and demanded justice.
She said: “My husband told me that he was going to Olujoda to get a contract. I was greatly surprised when I heard he was killed because he was wandering around.
“The question to ask is that, did they see any dangerous weapon on him? Why couldn’t they take him to the person who contracted him for the job to know his true identity? This is a gross injustice and the perpetrators must be brought to book.”
One of Obadare’s relations, Mrs. Omowumi Idowu, said she was shocked when notified that her brother, who had a slight malaria a few days earlier, had been killed.
She added: “When I was told, I initially had the impression that he died of the ailment he complained of a few days back. But I was shocked to hear that he was beaten to death by some people.
“When we spoke on the phone, he informed me that he was going to secure a job at Olujoda area on the faithful day without knowing that it would be his end.”
Idowu called on the police to get to the root of the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Sunday Abutu, said the command had commenced investigations into the matter.
Abutu said the victim’s body had been deposited in the morgue, while some people had been arrested in connection with the incident.
