NCC targets N632bn in 2022

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) yesterday said it had set a revenue target of N632.39 billion for 2022. This was as the commission reassured the public that the recently-launched Fifth Generation Network (5G) would not be hazardous in any way to users of the spectrum and the Nigeria as a whole based on research carried out.

The NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, made the statement when he appeared before the National Assembly Joint Committee on Communications for the 2022 budget defence. Danbatta explained that the targeted revenue would be made up of expected proceeds from the 5G spectrum auction.

He said, “Each slot of the 5G spectrum is going for an exact price of N75 billion. However, in an auction it can go as high as N100 billion. “The exact price for the spectrum auction in 2022 will give the Federal Government, N300bn. When the projected revenue is added to it, we are expecting well over N600bn because it is an auction.

“Our revenue in 2022 will be higher than what is being generated in 2021 which as at the end of September was about N3115billion. “For the commission’s main budget, a sum of N86.2 is proposed for recurrent expenditures, N29.36 billion is for capital while N2.55 Billion is earmarked for special projects.”

When asked by the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC, Lagos Central) and some members on safety of the 5G, the NCC boss said nothing hazardous would happen.

“Concerning the fear about the 5G spectrum, we share the same concern because it is justified and we have been sensitizing Nigerians about the safety of the new technology. The 5G network we are going to launch has no harm.

Danbatta said, “Up till date, there is no credible evidence about the health hazard of the 5G technology. Therefore it is safe. There is no medical evidence from the World Health Organization indicating any harmful effect of the spectrum on the health of the end users.

“The NCC has enjoined at Nigerians at the national level to disabuse their minds on the purported harmful effect of the spectrum and we will continue to sensitize them on spectrum until everybody embraces the use of the G5 network.”

He also said with the launch of Computer Incidence Response Team, telecommunications network was secure against any form of cyber attacks in the country.

“Recently, not up to a month ago, the commission unveiled its computer incidence responsive which is a certified round protection for cyber attacks against telecommunication network.

“I am very proud to bring this information to the knowledge of the general public that all over the country, our computers are secured from cyber attacks. This effort is going to be intensified in order to ensure the safety of our computers.”
